People become homeless for a variety of reasons, many of which are very complicated and often tragic. Christian Relief Services believes that one of the most important steps in helping break the cycle of homelessness is through housing. In an attempt to reduce the rate of homelessness in Virginia, we provide 102 units specifically designated for the homeless in Fairfax County, Virginia as part of our “Homes for the Homeless program.” Our program provides much more than just place to live. We conduct housing counseling, property maintenance, and property management. We also supervise the case management of the sponsoring agencies that work with transitional housing clients to provide direct services including intensive case management, clinical service, mediation monitoring, psychosocial rehabilitation, vocational services and health care. Our housing program also provides a safe place for individuals that need it most—abused women and children. Often times abused women and their children have no where safe to go to avoid violence; homelessness is often their only option. Fortunately, in Fairfax County, Virginia, there is another option: Christian Relief Services’ affiliate, Americans Helping Americans, maintains and operates 12 units for our Safe Places Residential Program. This remarkable program provides direct case management and family therapy to victims of domestic violence and has weekly support groups for women and children who have fled domestic violence.
